Stress, anxiety, and depression often co-occur in life at the same times. Stressful life events can trigger anxiety and depression, and anxiety and depression can make it harder to cope with stress.

Anxiety: The Worry Trap 😟
Anxiety is that feeling of unease, worry, or fear that can be mild or severe. It's your body's natural response to perceived threats, but sometimes this response can become excessive, leading to anxiety disorders. Did you know that anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health conditions?

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It can affect your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and physical health.

SAD, a Triad of Connections: Distinguishing differences?
The three challenges of SAD can often be intertwined, making it difficult to distinguish between them. This is because they share many common symptoms, such as difficulty sleeping, fatigue, irritability, and changes in appetite or mood (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022).
It's not uncommon for someone to experience symptoms of all three conditions simultaneously.

Shared Risk Factors: Genetics, life experiences (such as trauma or chronic stress), and personality traits can increase vulnerability to all three conditions (McEwen, 2012).
For example, individuals with a family history of anxiety or depression may be more likely to experience these conditions themselves.
The Stress-Anxiety-Depression (SAD) Cycle: Stress can trigger or worsen anxiety and depression, and vice versa. This can create a vicious cycle where one condition feeds into the other, making it harder to manage any of them effectively (Hammen, 2005).
For instance, someone experiencing chronic stress may develop anxiety, which can then lead to depression if left unmanaged.

Research suggests that practices like mindfulness, gratitude, and acts of kindness can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms (Sin & Lyubomirsky, 2009).
