Our inner critic can be a sneaky saboteur, undermining our confidence and holding us back from achieving our goals. It can manifest as:
- Negative self-talk: "I'm such a failure," "I'm not good enough," "I'll never be able to do this."
These negative thoughts can erode your self-esteem and create a self-fulfilling prophecy, hindering your progress and preventing you from reaching your full potential (Brantley, 2007). - Perfectionism: Setting unrealistic standards and constantly striving for flawlessness.
Perfectionism can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and a fear of failure, preventing individuals from enjoying their accomplishments and taking risks (Shafran, Egan, & Wade, 2010). - Comparison to others: Feeling inadequate or envious when comparing yourself to others.
Social comparison theory suggests that we naturally compare ourselves to others, but upward comparisons (comparing ourselves to those we perceive as better than us) can lead to negative self-evaluations and decreased wellbeing (Festinger, 1954).
The Impact of Self-Criticism 💥
Self-criticism can have a detrimental effect on our mental health and well-being. It can lead to:
